Jazz on a Very Old Baby Grand Piano Blends with Locally-Made Wine & Chocolate at the Black Swan Inn on August 10th
(TILTON) Jonas Chickering was born in 1798, grew up in New Ipswich, NH, and established the very first piano company in the U.S. in 1823, after moving to Boston. His pianos at the London International Exhibition of 1851 earned a gold medal with special mention for the grand, which was noted for brilliancy and power as well as its great solidity. At the time of Chickering’s death in 1853, his company was manufacturing 1500 pianos a year, almost twice the sales of his largest competitor in Boston. In 1908, Chickering was sold to the
American Piano Company, makers of some of America's better brand names, which continued to build the Chickering name for decades.
On Saturday evening, August 10th, a Chickering baby grand piano will be brought to life by Benjamin O’Brien, a musician from the Lakes Region at the Black Swan Inn in Tilton. O’Brien’s talents range from piano, singing, to guitar playing, to even church organ. Having just graduated UNH in 2012, he has earned a BA in Music Performance. Currently the music director at St. Andre Bessette Parish in Laconia as well as the music teacher at Holy Trinity school in Laconia, O’Brien loves to put PASSION into his playing. Complimentary wines from two local wineries will be offered to listeners. Hermit Woods, a small boutique winery that opened in Sanbornton in 2011, is offering a dry red wine made from their second harvest from their young, organic vineyard. This Selection is a field blend of their grapes combined with local, wildflower, raw and unfiltered honey to balance the high acidity of the grapes.
Stone Gate Vineyard in Gilford has been open commercially for six years, having planted their first grapes 13 years ago. They will be offering a sweeter dessert red wine. Owners Jane and Peter Ellis plan to retire and announced this to be their final season with the winery. However, they will continue to grow grapes for other wineries.
In addition, Rick’s Fine Gourmet Chocolates in Laconia will be providing a variety of gourmet chocolate truffles, and Maureen Raiche,former owner of. R & K Sweet Sensations in Dover which was in business for 5 years were hand made and custom designed. They were known for their designer chocolate lollipops and were sold in stores like Yummies Candies and Treats in Kittery Maine, Sweet Josies Candy Shop in York Maine. She will be making chocolate covered strawberries and raspberries along with handmade dark chocolate swans, all complimentary to attendees.
Jazz performance is from 6:00 – 9:00 PM on Saturday, August 10th with an $17 admission fee.
